Tobias Gilliam committed to UK on 2/11/2015. But since then, the 6'0", 185 lbs. Cornerback from Huber Heighs, Ohio has received offers for scholarships from 10 schools. Despite being pursued by the likes of Washington State, Penn State, Indiana, Nebraska and Michigan State, he remains solid to the Wildcats. "I am 100-percent all in."
The University of Kentucky football commitment has been keeping busy by bouncing from camp to camp across several states, competing against some of the best high school players in the country and honing his craft as a defensive back.
"You can never get enough competition," Gilliam told the Herald-Leader of his busy schedule. "And at my position it's all about repetition. ... I'm trying to come in to play. I'm not trying to come in to sit down. I'm coming in competing. We need to compete for the SEC East. I don't want to see them lay down for nobody," he said.
When he's in town, Gilliam hangs out with current Cats Blake McClain and Kendall Randolph — both have played nickel back under Mark Stoops — and he tries to soak up as much knowledge about the position from talking to them and watching their game film.
Gilliam said he speaks at least once a week with Stoops, defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley and Vince Marrow, his primary recruiter. He's also been as much of a salesman for UK as any of the program's class of 2016 commitments on social media and in camp settings.
Going into this weekend, Rivals.com ranked UK with the No. 17 recruiting class nationally.
Gilliam says the Cats can do even better, and he's going to do everything he can to make it happen.
"We're trying to get a top-10 recruiting class," he said. "We're trying to get the best recruiting class in UK history. Let's go start off our legacy right. Why not? Why not try to reach for a top-10 recruiting class in the nation? We can do it."
